The show, which was created by Mindy Kaling of The Office fame and Justin Noble, is based at fictional Essex College located in Vermont. The HBO comedy was filmed at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York for Season 1.
In addition to utilizing the campus for exterior scenes, the production also used the nearby Market Street Industrial Park, which was previously home to the Bleachery, for sets and storage. The set of the campus chemistry lab was built at the location, while the interior of Leighton’s house was shot in a local warehouse.
Filming for the first season was met with enthusiasm from members of the community. Many residents stopped to watch the filming or took to social media to express their excitement. The series also filmed on the streets of downtown Poughkeepsie. The production team renamed some of the nearby businesses and put up banners for the fictional Juliet Theater, Fox Hole Donuts and Vermont Botanical Gardens.
