Doctors ask about sexual activity to determine whether a patient is at risk for STIs and pregnancy. Sexual activity includes anything that involves skin-to-skin contact with the genital area, including oral sex.
Contrary to popular belief, doctors cannot tell if a person is a virgin simply by looking at their hymen or a pelvic exam. Here are a few signs that a person is sexually active:
1. Physical Changes
A woman who is sexually active might experience physical changes such as tenderness in the breasts or thighs, itchy bumps around the genital area, or a change in her menstrual cycle. Women might also develop a darkening or reddening of the skin in areas around their vulva and rectum as a result of the hormones involved in sexual activity.
Men may also experience a physical change when they become sexually active, such as the rupture of the hymen (which is sometimes falsely reported to be a sign of virginity). The hymen can actually tear as a result of exercise or other physical activities, and it doesn’t necessarily indicate that a man has been sexually active.
Males might also be more inclined to engage in sexually suggestive behavior, such as flirtatious talk or innuendos, or be more touchy-feely with others. Additionally, men might have a longer penis as a result of sexual activity.
Knowledge of contraception is also a potential indicator of sexual activity. Tom, for example, might be more likely to tell friends or co-workers about his sex life if he is well-informed about different methods of contraception.
However, it is important to note that the decision of when and if to become sexually active is an individual one and shouldn’t be dictated by social stereotypes. Similarly, the decision to stop engaging in sexual activities should be made by an individual.
2. Emotional Changes
While observing physical cues and behavioral patterns can help us determine sexual activity, it’s important to remember that individuals are unique, and their journey with intimacy is private. For this reason, direct and respectful communication is key.
Mood changes can often be a sign of sexual activity, as intimate experiences may lead to heightened emotions or feelings of satisfaction. However, mood changes can also occur for a number of reasons. For example, a woman who is demisexual may find affection and emotional closeness arousing, but she doesn’t want to have sex with her friends. In this case, she may decide to seek counseling instead of continuing with the relationship.
A man’s level of comfort and ease in discussing sex is also a potential indicator. For example, Tom’s openness and willingness to discuss sex with Jane is likely the result of their shared experience and mutual desire for a more responsible and satisfying intimate relationship.
A woman who isn’t sexually active will likely have a hard time ejaculating, even in the presence of her partner. Likewise, her hymen will likely not tear as the result of sexual activity as it’s commonly believed (this is actually a myth). The hymen can tear due to various reasons, including excessive exercise or physical activities, and some people are born with no hymen at all.
3. Lack of Communication
A woman who doesn’t talk about sex with her partners or show an interest in sexual topics, discussions, and media might not be sexually active. This doesn’t mean she is a virgin but could simply be less experienced with her body and sexual desires.
There is a dearth of literature from SSA on the effect of parent-child communication about sex on young people’s decision making and protection use [22]. However, a few studies have found that parental discussion and monitoring has an important impact on youths’ protection choices [23, 28]. It is therefore recommended that parents should initiate discussions and encourage their children to use SRH services.
Mothers have been found to be reluctant to communicate with their schooling children about sex and sexually transmitted infections (STDs). They often wait for clues that their children are engaging in sexual activities before they warn them against risky behaviour. This approach may be too late as many young people employ secretive sex practices.
A woman who takes wide steps or long steps while walking might be more sexually active than one who takes small short steps. But remember that these are only some of the signs and that everyone’s journey with their sexuality is unique. Open communication should always be your go-to approach when trying to understand someone’s sexuality.
4. Relationship Issues
When people develop a deep emotional connection with one another, they often feel more open about personal matters, including sexual desires and experiences. This increased level of open communication can be a sign that they are sexually active or may be in the process of becoming so.
Another sign of sexual activity is a couple’s tendency to be physically close to each other, such as holding hands or kissing frequently. This physical intimacy can be a manifestation of romantic or sexual attraction, as well as a desire to spend more time together.
A woman who is not sexually active might exhibit some signs of being horny, such as stealing glances at other men or showing a fondness for flirtatious words and gestures. However, if she lacks a social life or is not willing to participate in mischief or pranks, she could be more inclined to seek out platonic relationships instead of romantic ones.
Another sign of sexual activity is a man’s familiarity with issues related to sex and health, such as the use of condoms or other forms of protection against sexually transmitted infections or diseases. This knowledge can be a indication that the man is sexually active or has been so in the past. It can also indicate that he and his partner are discussing sexual expectations and planning for their future.
